The Lord of the Flies, written by renowned author William Golding and adapted to the stage by Nigel Williams, showcases a different side of humanity that we may not be exposed to.
The play, which focuses on a group of British schoolboys who survived a plane crash and are stranded on an island without any adult supervision, highlights humans’ truly dark instincts of survival.
The term ‘survival of the fittest ’is portrayed vividly in the play and manages to attract its audiences to this realistic portrayal of childlike behaviour when savagery becomes a day-to-day lifestyle.
The play is centred around children between the ages of six and 13 and has been difficult for a cast of late teens to portray. However, with the guidance of the Director Vinodh Senadeera and Assistant Director Lihan Mendis, the cast embodied their characters successfully. Sansoni, who plays the lead Ralph, expressed his gratitude to be able to lead the young Thomian thespians. He stated that this entire experience has been tedious, however, in the end it was all worth it. Anuk Dharmasena, who plays the role of Jack, the antagonist, spoke about how this experience was such a privilege and what an honour it was to be a part of this production, especially as it had been produced by the English Drama Society. The play will take place at the Lionel Wendt on the 23, 24 and 25 February from 7.30 p.m. onwards. Tickets are priced at Rs. 2,000, Rs. 1,500, Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 800 (balcony) and are available at the theatre along with the box plan. Tickets can also be bought online at the www.lionelwendt.org.
