Lasith Abeyratne celebrates his maiden One-Day century for CCC against Kandy Customs CC

The right-arm seam of Nisala Tharaka and the left-arm slow spin of Upul Indrasiri who shared eight wickets between them saw Negombo CC pull of a remarkable five wickets win over fancied Tamil Union who were shot out for 99 after being invited to bat first on a slow pitch in a SLC Major Limited Over inter-club tournament match played at the P. Sara Oval yesterday.

Prolific run-getter Lasith Abeyratne scored his maiden One-Day century (100 not out off 93 balls, 6 sixes, 2 fours) as CCC piled up 303-5 and beat Kandy Customs CC by a thumping margin of 212 runs to record their first win of the tournament after two defeats.

Army SC were extremely unlucky not to beat Bloomfield when their match ended in a no-result due to bad weather. Centuries by opener Ashan Randika (124 off 116 balls, 8 sixes, 7 fours) and Himasha Liyanage (101* off 93 balls, 3 sixes, 7 fours) who put on 212 for the third wicket and a power-laden knock of 52 not out off just 13 balls inclusive of 8 sixes by skipper Thisara Perera saw Army SC hit up an imposing 318-3 off 41 overs. Bloomfield were down on their knees at 73-6 in 17 overs when the rain came to their rescue.

Ragama CC shocked defending champions Chilaw Marians CC by pulling off a creditable 31-run win in a low scoring contest at FTZ grounds Katunayake to record their third successive win. Chilaw Marians who had two close wins in their first two matches failed to respond to Ragama CC’s moderate total of 178 and were dismissed for 139. The principal performers of the match were Janith Liyanage (82 off 118 balls) for Ragama CC and Charuka Tharindu (6 for 35) for Chilaw Marians CC – both career-best performances.

NCC continued their dominance in Group C with their third win in as many matches beating Ace Capital CC by 230 runs. Ace Capital were shot out for the lowest total in the tournament – 30 with no batsmen reaching double figures. Former One-Day Sri Lanka all-rounder Chaturanga de Silva picked up five wickets.

A maiden One-Day century from former Ananda College batsman Sammu Ashan (107* off 105 balls) saw SSC maintain their unbeaten record in Group D with a 108-run win over Kurunegala YCC under the Duckworth/Lewis rain rule.

Other clubs to record wins Galle CC, Nugegoda S&WC, Badureliya CC, Moors SC and Colts. The Panadura SC v Lankan CC match was abandoned without a ball bowled at Panadura due to a wet outfield. (ST)
