Ampara Educational Zone triumphs at Samaposha Eastern Provincial School Games

  • Three new provincial records, 3450 young athletes from 374 schools participating in 116 events 

 

The Eastern Provincial School Games of the islandwide ‘Samaposha Provincial School Games 2019’ series concluded recently, with the athletes representing the Ampara Educational Zone declared the overall winners. The Paddirippu Educational Zone athletes received the runners-up prize while the Trincomalee Educational Zone was placed third.

From the winning teams representing the individual educational zones, the overall Boys Championship Trophy was won by the Paddirippu Educational Zone. The runner-up was the Trincomalee Educational Zone and third place was awarded to the Akkaraipattu Educational Zone.

In the Girls Championship, the Ampara Educational Zone was the overall winner, with the Paddirippu Educational Zone placed runner-up and the Batticaloa Educational Zone adjudged third.

The young athletes were successful in establishing three new provincial records during these games. 

At the Samaposha Eastern Provincial School Games, 3450 young athletes participated from 374 schools in 116 events. The Games were held from 24-28 July at the Leelarathna Grounds, Kantale. 

The event is part of a series being held in the Uva, North-Central, Eastern and North Western Provinces, powered by CBL Samaposha, manufacturer of the nation’s popular cereal brand, Samaposha. 

At the conclusion of the School Games, Eastern Provincial Department of Education Assistant Director E.G.P.I Dharmathilake said, “After 30 years of war, we salute Samaposha who have come forward as the first sponsor to willing lend support to the province to uplift our sporting standards. This Provincial School Games is an extremely valuable event for the area and being held for the second time. We are overjoyed and offer our heartfelt thanks to them.” 

Presenting the prizes to the winners, CBL Food Cluster Marketing General Manager Jayanga Perera noted, “To build a healthy and nourished future generation, Samaposha is manufactured from four locally-sourced grains such as corn, rice, soya and green gram, and has earned international accolades as an ideal food source for nutrition. Through this we are able to ensure our young athletes are powered and our younger generation receives the nutrition and strength needed. As a local entity we have organised these School Games to strengthen and uplift the sporting standards of our sportsmen and women to international levels.”
