Sri Lanka loses first healthcare professional to COVID-19

A medical professional’s death due to COVID-19 yesterday occurred for the first time in the island, with the death of Dr. Gayan Danthanarayana.

Having tested positive for COVID-19, the medical professional was under medical care at the Colombo East Base Hospital. However, due to medical complications, Dr. Danthanarayana was transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

Despite receiving treatment for close to a month, Dr. Danthanarayana died of COVID-19 yesterday and is considered the first medical professional to have died of the virus in the island.

He was 32-years-old.
