SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka was feted for providing the ‘Best Social Service’ at the Janabhimani Honorary Awards 2019, organised by the All Ceylon Independent Media Organization and International Multi Publishers, at the BMICH on 29 November.

The award was presented in recognition of its four decades of taking children into its care where their own parents could not look after them, for providing them with a home markedly different from other children’s homes and for giving them educational and vocational training opportunities to prepare them for the world.

National Director Divakar Rathnadurai, who accepted the award for SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka, stated: “I am happy that SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka was given this award in recognition of our unrelenting commitment towards children without parental care in our country from 1981. It is the hard work of all our board members and staff at SOS Children’s Villages, Sri Lanka that made it possible for us to win this award. I also take this opportunity to thank our international SOS staff for all the support, advice and goodwill extended to us. We, as one SOS family in Sri Lanka, look forward to continuing to work closely with SOS Children’s Villages International into the future, in order to keep doing what we do best - that is to provide a ‘Loving Home for Every Child’.”

The Janabhimani Awards is an annual ceremony which recognises individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to Sri Lanka in various ways. The ceremony this year saw Sri Lanka Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva gracing the occasion as Chief Guest. SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka Deputy National Director Kirthi Hettiarachchi and Assistant Director and Fund Development and Communication Head Gayantha Dalpadado also attended the event.

The ceremony recognised the services of Sri Lankans from diverse backgrounds including entrepreneurs, medical experts, social activists, academics, artists, media veterans, musicians and others who have rendered services to the country’s growth, reconciliation and prosperity.
