The restructuring and reforms process of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party would be carried out between the months of May and June by separate reform committees, SLFP senior Mahinda Samarasinghe announced yesterday.

Addressing a press briefing at the Party headquarters yesterday, Minister Samarasinghe said that President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the leader of the SLFP, had instructed that the reforms be centred on the recommendations of the report submitted by the committee headed by Dr. Sarath Amunugama as well as the proposals made by all stakeholders to the SLFP. The report, which was submitted to the SLFP Central Committee on Tuesday (24 April), predominantly focused on the practicality of the SLFP remaining in the National Unity Government.

President Sirisena appointed the committee headed by Dr. Amunugama earlier this month, soon after the No-Confidence Motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Central Committee meeting on Tuesday, which was chaired by the President, had decided to appoint a separate committee to oversee the party reforms and restructuring which would take place from 8 to 15 May, Minister Samarasinghe said, adding that the final decision would be announced in June.

Responding to queries regarding the 16 rebelling SLFP-ers who are to sit in the Opposition, Minister Samarasinghe asserted that they would support any move by the 16 to rejoin the Government.

“We did not force anyone to leave the Government. Our stance is to protect our numbers in Parliament. If they want to rejoin us in the Government, we are there to fight for them and to ensure that they are given the positions they deserve,” Minister Samarasinghe opined.

SLFP May Day in Batticaloa on 7 May

The decision to hold the rally in Batticaloa was taken during the Central Committee meeting held on Tuesday, where it was also decided that a rally would be held instead of a procession, deviating from tradition.

A committee, led by SLFP Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, was appointed to organise the May Day rally.

A commemoration ceremony will also be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall on 1 May to felicitate late SLFP seniors, such as Alavi Moulana and T. B. Ilangaratne, for their services rendered to the Party and country.
