The Government is looking at restructuring the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) with the aim of providing a high quality transport services to the general public as per a paper tabled in Parliament yesterday.

By regularising the operations of the existing 105 main depots and converting the SLTB into an effective and efficient state institution, the Government plans to overcome the issues hindering growth and preventing SLTB from meeting public expectation.

According to the proposed administrative structure under the restructuring program, the 105 main depots and the 17 sub-depots scattered all over the country will be adjusted to have 59 main depots and 59 sub-depots. The restructuring program intends to introduce six night stops as well.

By making these changes the Government believes that timely payment of salaries and statutory payments of the employees who serve the SLTB will be made on time as expected. Implementation of programs to further advance their service conditions and the creation of an efficient and qualitative transport service utilising new technology are also a part of this proposal, which assures job security for the existing staff.
