Prime Minister of Malta Dr. Muscat speaking at the CHOGM Business Forum

Malta will host the first Commonwealth Conference on Foreign Direct Investment next year. Dr. Muscat made his announcement when he was addressing the Commonwealth Business Forum in London on Monday, which is a prelude to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, better known as CHOGM that will start off tomorrow.

He stated that all agencies for the promotion of investment, small businesses and international corporations will be invited for this conference in order to continue to consolidate the work being done during this week’s Business Forum

The Maltese Prime Minister is the outgoing Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth Heads of Meeting with the last CHOGM having been held in Malta in 2015. Dr. Muscat will be handing over this role to Prime Minister Theresa May with this year’s CHOGM being held in the United Kingdom, in London and Windsor.

Dr. Muscat’s address made this first commitment in London, with today’s start of a series of events being held in preparation for the meeting of the Heads of Government of Commonwealth countries.

Dr. Muscat’s comment was during the inaugural session of the Commonwealth Business Forum, which was also addressed by British Prime Minister, Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The Maltese Government is represented at this Forum by Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Businesses Chris Cardona, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg, and Parliamentary Secretary for Financial Services, the Digital Economy and Innovation Silvio Schembri.

The three-day Business Forum is being held at the Guildhall, and is being attended by some 800 delegates, between executive officers of companies and corporations and representatives of Governments.

Besides this Business Forum, three other Forums are being held simultaneously: the Forum for Youths, the Forum for Women and the Forum for the People. CHOGM, which is meeting with the theme ‘Towards a Common Future’, ends on Friday.
