The concept of corporate governance is becoming increasingly important in companies, especially to avoid mismanagement. Good corporate governance is necessary to enable companies operate more efficiently, to improve access to capital and mitigate risk. To ensure that there is good corporate governance in place in companies there is a growing momentum to improve standards of individual directors and boardroom performance through education, training and evaluation.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID), the trailblazer on board governance in Sri Lanka, certified 12 participants from the 9th Intake who completed all 4 parts of the flagship Board Leadership Director Certification Program (BLT) at a recently held event at the Kingsbury.  SLID Chairman Rasakantha Rasiah welcomed the participants and congratulated them on now being equipped to being more effective directors. He welcomed Shiromal Cooray and in his introduction of the Chief Guest of the evening, he stated that Shiromal contributed greatly in the infancy stage of SLID and one of those responsible to the stature SLID has grown into today and for its continued success, especially during her term as SLID Chairperson.

Shiromal Cooray, spoke on one goal, number 5, of the UN Sustainable Development goals which was on gender equality, an area that she was passionate about. She discussed how we can all work towards redressing the disparity in the number of women who graduate from university to those who are employed and those who are Directors on Boards of listed companies. She encouraged everyone to in their own little way contribute to assist females to come to their potential and thereby bringing in more gender diversity to Boards in Sri Lanka.

Shiromal Cooray’s advice was followed by the awarding of the certificates by her and Chairman Rasakantha Rasiah.

The following have successfully completed all four parts of the program and their names will be added onto SLID’s list of potential Independent Directors and shared if they meet the relevant search criteria of companies. This is the only list in Sri Lanka which includes names of people who have completed a director certification program which is accredited by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC).
