Sri Lanka’s premier higher education institute SLIIT held its 21st annual Convocation ceremony at SLIIT Campus Malabe, honouring the achievements of more than 370 new graduates.

The Chief Guest for the first session was High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives David McKinnon. Curtin University Australia’s Dean of Teaching and Learning Associate Professor Chris Rawson joined him as Guest of Honour.

In his convocation address, High Commissioner McKinnon said, “I am extremely impressed to see the diversity of the class here today. It would not have always been an easy journey but you walk out of here head held high with a valuable qualification in your hand and your future does begin today. With the reputation and high standards held by SLIIT, the knowledge and skills you have will serve you well in the rapidly changing world. You are empowered to bring positive change, not just professionally, but to create a modern, outward-looking Sri Lanka and better world for all of us to live in.”

He added, “SLIIT produces graduates ready for the modern world and addressing some of the gaps in the education system. Education is a lifelong endeavour, only through continuous education that we can add to the vast knowledge of humanity. Your experience at SLIIT is an experience many would not have and I hope you use that to inspire, create and make positive change.”

Gracing the second session of the convocation ceremony as the Chief Guest was the Kingdom of Raigam Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ravi Liyanage.

Offering words of wisdom to the new graduates he stressed, “The need for great entrepreneurs have become an utmost requirement unlike ever before. Turbulence faced by graduates is much more than before. Sri Lanka faces lack of emerging entrepreneurship. As young graduates today who would be the future lifeblood of the country, you have the fullest responsibility to turn this imbalance favourable to us, finding solutions to challenging problems, become job makes instead of job seekers.”   “Today marks a significant juncture in your education journey. However, this is the beginning of another longer and more demanding and challenging but nevertheless the brightest chapter of your life. To be successful in future, you have to open your eyes to the world. Do what you love and also what the country loves. The country loves job makers and not job seekers, like never before, therefore please take initiatives to produce them among you,” he concluded.  From the 376 new graduates, the following outstanding individuals received awards for best performance, a gold medal for academic excellence and cash prizes.
