Sri Lanka’s tea production totalled 22.4 million kg in August, down by 3.7 million kg, or 14%, from a year earlier.

Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said all elevations have shown a decrease in production Y-o-Y, with Low Growns recording the highest, followed by High Growns and Medium Growns.

January-August 2020 cumulative production, too, was down by 31.8 million kg to 179.1 million kg. All elevations show a decrease Y-o-Y with Low Growns, once again, recording the highest deficit followed by High Growns and Medium Growns, Forbes added.

CTC production for August of 1.6 million kg showed a fairly significant decrease of 0.5 million kg in comparison to August 2019. Forbes said High Grown production for the month of August 2020 remained static vis-à-vis August 2019, whilst Mediums have shown a marginal decrease Y-o-Y. Low Growns, however, show a substantial decrease compared to August 2019.

On a cumulative basis, January-August 2020 CTC production of 15.6 million kg saw a marginal gain vis-à-vis 15.4 million kg of January-August 2019. High Growns show a gain Y-o-Y, whilst Mediums remained static. Low Growns, however, show a decrease compared to the corresponding period of 2019.
