Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya decided to cast his vote yesterday after a lapse of nine years to assure voters that it was safe to go out and vote.

“I am 65 years old, and I haven't voted since 2011 but this time I voted early so as to send a message to voters that there is no health risk involved in going to the polling booth,” he said.

Deshapriya cast his vote at the Lindsay Balika Vidyalaya, Bambalapitiya.

He made an appeal to the youth of the country in particular to exercise their franchise saying: “Your vote is your power.”
