The role of the private sector in conserving our species and biodiversity is crucial, particularly in developing countries like Sri Lanka, where the majority of the population depends on natural resources for their livelihoods and overall economic growth. However, as the private sector is often being criticised for excessive exploitation of natural resources leading to their degradation and generating negative externalities for maximising their profits, it is a difficult call to balance their role with biodiversity conservation. Nevertheless, the private sector actively engages in various biodiversity conservation projects to enhance economic development.

In order to highlight the role of the private sector in biodiversity and environmental conservation, Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL), in association with its members – PET Bottle Company Ltd. (Olu), People’s Leasing and Finance PLC and Watawala Plantations PLC – is organising a learning event on the topic – ‘The Importance of Keeping Nature in Tact – Business Challenges’, from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 2 July at the People’s Leasing and Finance PLC’s Head Office premises located at 1161, Maradana Road, Colombo 8.

Good practices and examples of private sector engagement in biodiversity conservation and economic development will be shared at this event, and will fuel participation by various industry sectors.

The keynote address will be delivered by Chitral Jayathilake – Vice President and Head of Ecotourism, John Keels PLC – Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts. This will be followed by a discussion moderated by Shiranee Yasaratne – Advisor, BSL, between eminent panellists including Prof. Nirmalie Pallewatte from the University of Colombo, Ishanda Seneviratne from Jetwing Hotels Ltd. and Binesh Pananwala from Watawala Plantations PLC on the topic, ‘Protect Our Species’.
