The Norochcholai coal power plant is Sri Lanka’s first and only large coal power plant. China is the only country in the world to help Sri Lanka build a large, modern and efficient coal plant by providing loans, technology and training our workers, according to a senior engineer of the coal power plant.

The cheap electricity generated by the coal power plant not only lights half of Sri Lanka and reduces the cost of living for every family, but also upgrades the town around the plant and creates a lot of job opportunities for local people.

In the past nine months since Phase II of the plant was completed, it is operating smoothly with the joint efforts and hard work of both Chinese and Sri Lankan workers. Recently because of sufficient during the rainy season, the hydropower plants were in full operation.

The CEB as planned will take turns to stop the three engines for necessary maintenance. It is a normal practice of every coal power plant in the world. No cars, machines or plants can run 24 hours a day, 356 days a year without any maintenance. Therefore, news reports alleging that the Norochcholai coal plant is sick again are not true. Sri Lankan people should value their first coal plant.
