Facebook, and Zuckerberg, embark on mega-IPO

Reuters: Facebook unveiled what is expected to be Silicon Valley’s largest ever initial public offering, but made it clear to outside investors that they will have little voice in its running, as founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will continue to exercise almost complete control.
The Harvard dropout, who launched what would become the social networking phenomenon out of his dorm room, will own 56.9 per cent of the voting shares of a company that is expected to be worth up to $100 billion when it goes public. He will have economic control of about 28 per cent of the shares, ranking him among the richest people in the world.

Sony sees $ 2.9 b loss, reveals daunting task for new CEO

Reuters: Japan’s ailing electronics giant, Sony Corp (6758.T), warned investors on Thursday it was heading for a worse-than-expected $2.9 billion annual loss, revealing the daunting task ahead for its incoming chief executive, Kazuo Hirai.
The company, overtaken by more innovative rivals such as Apple and Samsung over the past decade, gave the forecast in its third-quarter results, surprising a market that had been expecting a full-year loss of barely half that amount.

Save a tree or two, use Taiwan erasable paper

(Reuters Life!):  “i2R e-Paper” is paper but not paper as we know it — not yet, anyway, say its Taiwan developers.
The product uses a thermal printer, the same kind as that used in fax machines. When the message is no longer needed, the paper can be erased with the flip of a switch — ready to be used up to 260 times.
Researchers at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, where the paper was developed, say it is the ideal replacement for the paper signs and posters that are now produced by the millions around the world.

Micromax enters Maldives; to launch 9 handsets

New Delhi: As part of aggressive global expansion strategy, cellphone maker Micromax Informatics Ltd., last week announced its foray into Maldivian telecom space.
The company will launch nine mobile phones priced competitively between 425 MVR to 4,500 MVR.
These include feature-rich mobile phones with dual SIM, utility phones, QWERTY chat-phones, music-touch phones and Android based smartphones.

RIM tilts at iPhone with new BlackBerry phones

Reuters:  Research In Motion unveiled two new versions of its touchscreen BlackBerry Torch last week as it seeks to regain ground it has lost to Apple and Google with powerful consumer-friendly models.
Investors reacted favourably, pushing RIM’s deflated stock price up more than 5 percent. But some analysts were sceptical, given delays leading up to this launch. They said a radically new software package due next year would be RIM’s big test.
The new Torch models include an all-touch version that mimics the popular style of Apple’s iPhone and most Android devices. Along with a previously announced upgrade to its workhorse Bold model, they are part of what the Canadian company called the biggest global launch in its history.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa ushered in an era of transformation through ICT, says I CT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) CEO Reshan Dewapura.
The ICTA CEO said so while participating at the IBM Software Executive Summit 2011 held in Colombo recently. Speaking further at the occasion on the topic ‘Ushering in the Transformation Era with IT in Sri Lanka,’ he said that the President had launched the era of transforming the country through ICT about six years ago.
