This year marks eight years since the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The WHO FCTC was a milestone for the promotion of public health and provides new legal dimensions for international health cooperation.
There has been a rapid growth in the number of parties to the Convention, now up to 176 countries, covering some 90% of the world’s population. The countries themselves have been taking extraordinary steps in tobacco control, with nearly 80% adopting or strengthening tobacco control legislation.
Promoting meditation

President pays homage to Dalada Maligawa, releases milk cows destined for slaughter
President Mahinda Rajapaksa participating in the Vesak Week activities, paid homage to the sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) in Kandy on Wednesday and received blessings from the Chief Prelate of Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Maha Nayake Thera.
During the visit to the temple, the President also opened a cobblestone footpath constructed by the National Lottery Board at a cost of Rs. 4 million for the benefit of the temple goers.
Etisalat to drive a unique ‘Spectacle Dansala’
With the aim of giving back to the community this Vesak season, leading mobile telecommunication innovator Etisalat Lanka will drive a unique Vesak Dansala to provide over 3,000 spectacles to financially challenged Sri Lankans, unable to afford the services of an optometrist and lenses.
In partnership with the Non-Governmental Organisation So Others May See Inc (SOMS), Etisalat will conduct the Vesak Dansala themed ‘Bringing hope, Giving sight’ under Etisalat’s Corporate Social Responsibility banner.
