Emerging markets most optimistic: MasterCard consumer survey

Consumer confidence across Asia/Pacific has risen amid stable economic growth, with the emerging markets of Myanmar, India, Indonesia and the Philippines leading the region, according to the latest MasterCard IndexTM of Consumer Confidence. The MasterCard Index of Consumer Confidence is based on a survey conducted between April 2013 and May 2013 on 12,205 respondents aged 18 to 64 in 27 countries within Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa. This is the 41st survey of Consumer Confidence conducted since 1993. Now in its 20th year the Index is Asia/Pacific’s most comprehensive and longest running consumer confidence survey. (Reuters) – A company that makes a cedar-based product it says repels bed bugs and head lice felt the sting of the U.S. government on Tuesday when it agreed to settle charges that its products have not been proven to work as promised. Chemical Free Solutions LLC, which was previously controlled by Dave Glassel, had been accused of being deceptive in advertising that its “Best Yet!” brand cedar oil products would get rid of lice and bed bugs, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said. The Best Yet! products had also been advertised as having been invented for the U.S. Army, among other incorrect statements, the FTC said. Retailers set safety plan for Bangladesh factories

An alliance of 17 leading U.S. and Canadian retailers has unveiled a five-year safety plan for Bangladesh garment factories aimed at improving safety conditions. The move, announced last week, follows the collapse of a clothing factory outside Dhaka in April that killed more than 1,100 workers – the deadliest disaster in the history of the garment industry. The pact follows a similar commitment in May from 70 mainly-European retailers, unions and activist groups to improve safety in Bangladesh’s notoriously dangerous clothing plants.
