Bharti Airtel to sell over 3,500 African mobile phone masts to Eaton Towers

(Reuters) – Bharti Airtel Ltd. has agreed to sell more than 3,500 of its mobile phone masts in six African countries to telecommunications tower company Eaton Towers in a bid to cut costs, the companies said on Monday. Bharti Airtel will lease back the towers from Eaton under a 10-year contract, the companies said in a statement. They did not disclose financial details of the deal. In July, Bharti Airtel agreed to sell about 3,100 masts in four African countries to Helios Towers Africa. The sales are part of the Indian group’s plan to divest most of its more than 15,000 towers in Africa in a process that sources have said could raise up to $2 billion.  Read More →

About 250 nominations have been received for e-Swabhimani 2014 – the national award for the best e-content and innovative ICT applications, says the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA). Registering an increase each year from the 130 entries at the first e-Swabhimani in 2009, the 2014 nominations mark the highest number during the five years, say ICTA sources. During the next few weeks these nominations will be carefully judged by a jury comprising local and international experts. The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has launched a more attractively redesigned website ( that enables customers, service providers, members of the public, and other visitors to find what they’re looking for with greater ease.
