Reuters: Intel Corp believes the worst is over for a personal computer industry hammered by the mobile revolution. The Santa Clara, California chipmaker forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street’s expectations on Tuesday, sending its stock 4% higher in extended trade. Investors have pushed shares of PC mainstays Microsoft Corp and Intel to decade-highs, partly on bets that the global slump in PC demand that began with Apple Inc’s launch of the iPad four years ago is hitting bottom. “PCs have stabilised,” Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told Reuters after Intel’s report. He said he expects shrinking demand from consumers in China and other developing countries to rebound,...

Reuters: Microsoft Corp on Wednesday started taking requests from individuals in Europe who want to be removed from its Bing search engine results following a court judgment in May guaranteeing the ‘right to be forgotten’. Microsoft, whose Bing search engine has 2.5% of the European search market, follows market leader Google Inc which complied with the ruling in May, and started removing some search results last month. The Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union in May ordered Google to remove a link to a 15-year-old newspaper article about a Spanish man’s bankruptcy, effectively upholding people’s ‘right to be forgotten’ on the Internet. The ruling, which affects...

Reuters: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is losing smartphone ground not only to cheaper Chinese rivals but also at the high end to Apple Inc, a survey showed, in an ominous sign for the South Korean giant as Apple readies to launch its next-generation iPhone 6. Samsung last week gave second-quarter earnings guidance that was far weaker than expectations and is on track for its worst quarterly profit in two years, a performance the company attributed in part to price competition and higher inventory levels in China. Research firm Counterpoint’s survey of 35 markets accounting for nearly 90% of global sales found that sales for the eight-month-old iPhone 5s stood at 7 million in May, compared with...

Reuters: Improved demand for personal computers after years of declines may not last as emerging markets remain weak and recent corporate upgrades in the United States and Europe may prove fleeting. The latest sign that the PC market’s stability could be short-lived came from technology distributor Synnex Corp. Its shares have slumped 16% since Chief Executive Officer Kevin Murai warned earlier in July that increased demand was already waning from companies buying new computers to upgrade their operating systems after Microsoft Corp stopped supporting Windows XP in April. Investors have pushed shares in PC mainstays Microsoft and Intel Corp and parts suppliers such as Seagate and Western Digital...
