TOKYO: Japan’s Toshiba Corp said on 26 July that it aims to cut a combined 10 billion yen ($100 million) in costs in its television and PC businesses in the year to March 2014 and double that figure in the following year to cope with persistently weak demand. Toshiba said it will shift 400 staff from its domestic TV and PC businesses to its social infrastructure arm and other segments this fiscal year, after breaking up its Digital Products company into three divisions. The company’s TV segment has been in the red for the past two years due to weak global sales, partly reflecting a slowdown in Europe, and a drop in domestic demand following a short-lived boost from a switch to digital broadcasting....

REUTERS:  Apple Inc shares opened about 5% higher on Wednesday after the technology company’s third-quarter profit beat analysts’ expectations due to stellar sales of its iPhones. The world’s largest technology company said it sold 31.2 million iPhones in the quarter, far more than the expected 26 million, easing concerns that growing competition is hurting demand for its smartphones. Higher sales of older phone models drove sales numbers in the quarter as Apple aggressively cut prices for the older iPhone 4 in emerging markets before phasing it out, Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Chris Caso wrote in a note. Many analysts have not updated their outlook on Apple stock, preferring to...

Reuters: Facebook Inc delivered strong evidence it can thrive on smartphones and tablets on Wednesday, reporting a much better-than-anticipated surge in mobile advertising revenue in the second quarter that ignited a nearly 17% share rally. The world’s No. 1 social network also reported an uptick in daily visitors to its service, allaying worries that a new crop of fast-growing mobile upstarts like WhatsApp and Snapchat could cut into the time consumers spend on Facebook. Facebook’s growing appeal to consumers and advertisers combined to deliver the company’s strongest ad revenue growth since the third quarter of 2011. Ad prices, which declined at Google and Yahoo, increased 13% at Facebook. “Facebook...

Reuters: After five years of explosive growth sales of high-end smartphones have hit a plateau and the $2 trillion industry – telecom carriers, handset makers and content providers – is buckling up for a bumpier ride as growth shifts to emerging markets, primarily in Asia. While carrier subsidies have helped drive sales of high-end devices in mature markets, the next growth chapter will be in emerging markets where cost-conscious users demand cheaper gadgets and cheaper access to cheaper services. This year, the number of mobile internet users in the developing world will overtake those in the developed world for the first time – growing 27 times since 2007, compared to the developed world’s...
