One Day Workshop on Industrial Relations and Labour Laws

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka will hold a Workshop on ‘Industrial Relations and Labour Laws’ from 9a.m. to 4.30p.m. on Tuesday 22 May at the Chamber Auditorium No 450 D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo-10. Resource person will be Ananda Sahabandu, an Assistant Commissioner of   Labour. Sahabandu is also an Attorney at Law having more than 25 years experience in the field of labour laws and labour relations and other employment related issues

Demand for IELTS increases around the world

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) reinforces its position as the world’s most popular high stakes English proficiency test, hitting a new record of more than 1.7 million tests sat around the world in 2011.
In the face of changing economic and migration conditions, IELTS has enjoyed 12% growth in number of tests sat in 2011 as compared to 2010 around the world. The latest figures marked the seventeenth year of continual growth in test numbers, with the number of tests taken tripling since 2005.
USA was the fastest growing market worldwide in 2011 with more than 50 test centres now open to candidates, while Canada also observed a significant rise in the number of tests taken in the past 12 months.

Scholarships for USA awards two more students

Anook Fonseka from Asian International School and Varthula Jayasekara from Royal Institute
Nugegoda were recently placed at University of North Dakota and Iowa State University respectively by Scholarships for USA (Pvt) Ltd (www.scholarshipsforusa.com). Anook plans to major in Aviation whilst Varthula plans to pursue Biological Engineering. UND’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences is one of the highest ranking aviation schools in US and since its introduction to Sri Lanka in 2008 by Priyanthi Dissanayake it has been attracting many discerning Lankan youth aiming for top quality aviation degrees at the most affordable cost.

10 more scholarships for studying in India

The Government of India yesterday announced the offer of 10 scholarships for Sri Lankan Nationals under the ‘Ayush Scholarship Scheme’ for UG/PG/Ph.D courses in Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy for the academic session 2012-2013.
The Government of India selects meritorious Sri Lankan nationals for award of these scholarships. Selection of candidates would be done in consultation with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Government of Sri Lanka, to pursue higher education degrees in some of the most reputed universities in India.

Committee to evaluate z-score

Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayaka says the President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Ministry to appoint a committee to evaluate the methodology of admitting GCE Advanced Level passed students to universities.

Govt. to form a regulatory body for private schools

Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena says that compilation of laws for regulation of private schools is in the parliament now.
Accordingly, a regulatory body is to be set up for this purpose.

Student visa rules cost UK universities millions, MPs told

Universities and colleges are spending millions of pounds to navigate the government’s “Kafkaesque” new student visa rules, a committee of MPs has been told.
An institution such as the London School of Economics spends £250,000 a year trying to understand regulations governing the entry of non-European Union students, the public accounts committee heard.
Medium-sized colleges have had to recruit more than a dozen members of staff each to ensure they are correctly complying with the rules, which were introduced in 2009 and significantly changed by the coalition last year in an effort to crack down on bogus colleges.
