End July worker remittances swell to $ 4 b

The Central Bank said yesterday worker remittances in the first seven months of this year had increased by 11% to $ 4 billion. In July worker remittances grew by 15.2% to $ 606.7 million in July 2014 compared to $ 526.6 million in the corresponding period of 2013. “Cumulative inflows of workers’ remittances rose to $3,966.6 million during the first seven months of 2014 from a corresponding figure of $3,565.6 million during the same period of 2013, resulting in a growth of 11.2%,” the Central Bank said.  Read More →

Ceylon Chamber study finds China is leading footwear exporter to Sri Lanka Sri Lankan manufactured footwear exports have doubled during the year 2013, compared to what was exported in 2012, a new study conducted by the Ceylon Chamber has found, while the trend is expected to continue during the year 2014, as well, the study reveals. According to the study, which is titled ‘Footwear Exports and Imports of Sri Lanka – Statistical Analysis’, which covers the periods of 2006 to 2013, Australia and Italy rank as the main export markets for Sri Lankan footwear. The analysis also shows that China is the leading exporter of footwear to Sri Lankan market accounting for 41% of the total footwear... 

Tourism earnings up 32% to $ 1.4 b

Earnings from tourism in the first eight months of this year have increased by 32% to $ 1.447 billion, according to Central Bank estimates. “Earnings from tourism are estimated to have increased by 22.2% to $202.7 million in August 2014 compared to $165.9 million in August 2013. Meanwhile, in cumulative terms tourist arrivals recorded a growth of 23.1% during the year to August 2014 while earnings from tourism soared by 32.1% to $1,447.2 million during the period,” the Central Bank said.
