General Secretary of the IndustriALL Global Union, Jyrki Raina will arrive in Sri Lanka on 15 February on a five-day visit. The Geneva-based IndustriALL Global Union, representing 50 million workers in 140 countries, is identified as the world’s single largest trade union federation. Raina will visit Sri Lanka on a fact-finding mission regarding issues faced by local workers, including those unjustly terminated by their employers. Farmers in North to get pension from this week

The Government will distribute pension payments to the farmers in the Northern Province from Monday under the new Farmers’ Pension Scheme, an official said. Paying pensions to the farmers in the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Manner, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya will commence on Monday, Director General of Agrarian Insurance Board Pandula Weerasinghe has said. The official told media that Rs. 178 million is needed monthly to pay the pension to the farmers under the new scheme which, according to the official, will be gazetted shortly. The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Assistant Director General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Yoshiteru Uramoto, visited Sri Lanka from 5 to 6 February 2014, at the invitation of the Ministry of Labour and Labour Relations. At the recently concluded Tea Auctions of 22 January 2014, Brunswick Estate had the proud distinction of establishing an all-time record price of Rs. 570 for a BP Grade in the Western High Grown Category. This line of tea was purchased by Mabroc Teas Ltd. Brunswick Estate is situated at an elevation of 4,100 feet above mean sea level on the Maskeliya Range of mountains on the western slopes of the central hills.
