Parents send their children to school for education. In this country, education is highly valued and often considered by many as the only way to progress. Therefore, those who design and deliver education in school and beyond bear a great national responsibility.

New Year: So what?

WHILE the dawn of a new year is good time for warm fuzzy feelings, given the global challenges we face today, it is also a time to ask some hard questions. How can my lifestyle be more responsible and responsive to the ‘alarming’ depletion of nature’s resources (even if I can economically afford it)? How can my business do the same?  If those of us who have an abundance of GEMs (Greed, Ego and Materialism) can ‘prune’ it, the world will be a better place.

KYOTO (ILO News): Repres-entatives of governments, workers and employers from the Asian, Pacific and Arab states have concluded a four day meeting at which they discussed ways the region could prepare to counter the consequences of the current economic uncertainty.

Equality of opportunity key for regional autonomy: President

‘Regional autonomy’ was a slogan used by the terrorists and their apologists. The need is for strong unity in diversity, for which regional autonomy is not the only way. A better approach would be equality of opportunity and the spread of democratic freedom and rights, together with speedy economic development of the north, in tandem with other regions of the country, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

WTO risks its future by keeping Doha talks alive

GENEVA (Reuters): The 153 members of the World Trade Organization agree on two things: We’re in a hole. And we must keep digging.
The hole is the Doha Development Round, a decade-old negotiation that was billed as the next stage of trade liberalisation after the creation of the WTO itself.
