Under fire over new electricity tariff, PUC defends itself

Under fire for proposing electricity tariffs which have been roundly criticised, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) yesterday defended its action as fair.
“We adopted an internationally-accepted fair and transparent procedure to identify the efficient unit cost of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

Saluting for a better society

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday kicked off the 8th National Jamboree 2010 at Hambantota under the auspicious of Sri Lanka Scout Association. As the Chief Guest President Rajapaksa declared open the Jamboree attended by over 8000 male and female scouts.

In tandem with the rebound in post-war economy and consumerism the Government yesterday reserved the Main Street in Pettah as an exclusive shopping street closing it for vehicular traffic. The unprecedented move until Friday is to benefit thousands who throng the Main Street to do their pre-X’mas and New Year shopping as well as pavement hawkers and other small time traders.
