HelpAge wins world’s largest humanitarian award for 2012

HelpAge International received the Hilton Humanitarian Prize at the Global Philanthropy Forum in Washington, D.C. on Monday, 16 April.
HelpAge International is the only global organisation with a singular focus on providing assistance to and advocating for disadvantaged older people. It helps older people claim their rights, challenge discrimination and overcome poverty, so that they can lead dignified, secure, active and healthy lives.

Korea signs deal for $ 200 m support for Sri Lanka

Korea yesterday signed an agreement to extend $ 200 million support for Sri Lanka thereby giving a major boost for ties between the two countries.
Witnessed by leaders of the two countries in Seoul an agreement for Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund to provide US$ 200 million for the development activities in Sri Lanka was signed by the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Vice Finance Minister of Korea Shin Je Yoon.

Global giant CMA CGM’s luxury cruise vessel Ms. L’Austral made her maiden voyage to Sri Lanka over the weekend at Galle port as well as Colombo with over 170 passengers and 120 crew on board. Sri Lankan inventors shine best in Geneva with Gold, Silver

The inventions of Dr S.J.B Lenadora and Dinesh Katugampala took the forefront at the ‘Inventions Geneva’ Exhibition last week, winning prestigious Gold and Silver medals at the event.
‘Inventions Geneva’ which is the 40th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, is considered to be one of the most important in the world. With 46 countries, represented by 789 exhibitors showing 1’000 inventions, it was open to visitors from all across Europe.

Firing another salvo at the Central Bank, UNP MP and economist Dr. Harsha De Silva yesterday alleged “creative accounting” in calculating per capita income statistics to show a higher figure and inflated economic growth.
Dr. de Silva told media that the Government was misleading international organisations and fellow Sri Lankans by calculating the per capita income of the country so that it would show an unrealistically high figure.
