The Customs Department has seized a container containing banned agricultural weedicide glyphosate, illegally imported to the island. The glyphosate stock has been imported from China.

The Customs discovered the 20-ft container in the Orugodawatta Container Yard.

According to the Customs, 3,948 cans of glyphosate containing over 15,000 liters of the banned agrochemical were found inside the container.

The glyphosate stock found in the container is valued at Rs. 55 million.

Glyphosate has been declared as a prohibited agrochemical in a special gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Finance on 11 June 2015.

Once the investigations are completed, the glyphosate stock will be re-exported, the officials said.

Further investigations are being conducted on the instructions of Director General of Customs Chulananda Perera.
