Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told a meeting for the Constitutional Council (CC) today that he would not reconvene Parliament and that in the middle of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka did not need another constitutional crisis.

“It is only the Supreme Court that can give an interpretation at a time like this and we are bound to act on the Court’s advice,” Jayasuriya said.

The working of the independent commissions was discussed at the meeting including the Election Commission and the National Police Commission.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, former MPs R. Sampanthan, Talata Athukorala, Mahinda Samarasinghe and Bimal Ratnayake, as well as civil society representatives on the CC Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Javid Yusuf and Naganathan Selvakkumaran.
