Prof. K.N. Jayatilleke memorial oration today

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Peradeniya is organising the K.N. Jayatilleke memorial oration on 25 July (today) at 3 p.m. at the Arts Faculty Seminar Room at Peradeniya University. It is an annual memorial event to celebrate the academic works of the late Prof. K.N. Jayatilleke, who was the Head of the Department of Philosophy at Peradeniya. 

He was the professor of Philosophy when his untimely demise occurred at the age of 50! Professor Jayatilleke was born on 1 November 1920 and graduated from the University of Ceylon in 1943. He then entered into the Chris Collage of Cambridge University for the postgraduate studies. He earned his MA from Cambridge and PhD from the University of London in 1943. The Doctoral dissertation Prof. Jayatilleke submitted, ‘Early Buddhist Theory of Knowledge’ was published later in 1963 and it has been a masterpiece in Buddhist epistemology worldwide.

The memorial oration will be delivered by Prof. R.D. Gunaratne, who was a student of Prof. Jayatilleke and who held the Chair of Philosophy later at Peradeniya.

University of Peradeniya Vice Chancellor Prof. Upul Dissanayaka, Faculty of Arts Dean Prof. O.G. Dayaratne Banda and Head of the Department of Philosophy Dr. Charitha Herath will speak at this event.
