Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayaka drew parallels yesterday in Parliament between the recent Manchester bombing and the gloomy past engulfed by terrorism, which triggered similar attacks in all parts of Sri Lanka.

Assuring that the Government would take all efforts to stop any possibility of terrorism on Sri Lankan soil, the Minister pledged to bring those who were behind the recent attacks motivated by religious and ethnic hatred.DFT-4-6

Seeking a few more days to conclude the ongoing investigations, the Minister said: “The police requested a few more days. The House will be kept informed. There were several incidents and the Police could have taken prompt action against the culprits. The Police will establish law and order without any hesitation. Hate speeches will be prevented.”

However, Chief Opposition Whip JVP MP Anura Dissanayake accused the Government of delayed measures against growing incidents of racial and communal violence in different parts of the island. “The Government should have nipped it in the bud. Instead, you show lethargy and weakness, which fuels the situation, leading the nation towards another bloodbath. The majority of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people seek peace and harmony. But a few would prefer violence. It is the duty of the Government to prevent the nation from getting pushed in the wrong direction and into the hands of those who prefer violence. The primary objective of these attacks is to make the Sinhalese and the Muslims clash,” he said. AH
