Accountable procurement system for local authorities

To officialise the joint civil society and Government-led working group convened by the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government (MPCLG) to implement the Cabinet-approved Open Government Partnership (OGP) commitment on establishing a “transparent and accountable procurement system for local authorities in Sri Lanka”, multiple stakeholders had a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - the OGP government coordinator - on 18 January.

Since the joint working group convened by Boralassa, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government, has met twice since the Cabinet approved the OGP national action plan last October, Federation of Sri Lankan Local Government Authorities (FSLGA civil society leading the procurement commitment) Executive Director Hemanthi Gunesekara briefed both coordinators from OGP civil society, Pushpi Weerakoon, and the Government, Harim Pieris, of the reviewing of the guidelines prepared by the FSLGA for municipalities, urban councils and pradeshiya sabhas by ministry officials, the procurement commission and representatives of civil society.
