‘Urban structural dynamics’, an international structural engineering conclave organised by the Society of Structural Engineers Sri Lanka (SSE-SL) will be held on 25 July at Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The SSE has already had its first successful conclave ‘Innovative Structures and Smart Buildings’ on 30 May. The third one on ‘Advances in Building Material and Façade’ is scheduled to be held on 22 November.

These events are organised jointly by the SSE-SL and Showcraft International Ltd. which is a leading trade fair organiser associated with Futurex Trade Fair and Events Ltd., India, which organises International Conferences and Exhibitions in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and India.

Sri Lanka, like other parts of the world, is becoming more and more urbanised nowadays. Having emerged from the influences of terrorism quite recently, this urbanisation drive is on the fast track due to the fact that it could lead to poverty alleviation, prosperity, and growth, if properly managed. In order to facilitate this and to focus energies on a constructive debate, the Society of Structural Engineers – Sri Lanka (SSE-SL) has organised a timely conclave on the theme ‘Urban Structural Dynamics’.

SSE-SL President Eng. K.L.S. Sahabandu stated that the main objective of these conclaves is to help the Sri Lankan developers, consultants, contractors and professionals in the construction industry to keep abreast with the state-of-the-art on analytical methods, innovations, technology and materials for designs and construction for buildings and other infrastructure facilities. He further stated that bringing together a diverse range of resource persons and stakeholders belonging to various public and private constituencies, the Conclaves would be truly open and frank discussions.

The Morning Session of the Conclave which will be chaired/moderated by Archt. Dr. K. Locana Gunaratna, former President of Sri Lankan Institute of Architect will consist areas of Smart Cities and Urban Transport Systems. Chunua Xiong of China will make her presentation on ‘Smart Cities and Internet+’ while Dr. Dimantha de Silva from Sri Lanka will speak on ‘Transport Infrastructure Requirements for Dynamic and Vibrant Colombo’. Archt. Plnr L.T. Kiringoda of Sri Lanka and Eng. Rajan Kataria of India will speak on ‘Dynamics of Urban Sri Lanka’ and ‘Delhi Metro Structural Concepts’ respectively.

The Afternoon Session will be chaired/moderated by SSESL Vice President Eng. N. Abeysuriya and will consist areas of ‘Smart Materials and Machines and Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development’. Takashi Kimura of Japan, Eng. A.P. Mahesh of Singapore, Eng. Brajesh Malviya of India, Kelsey Smith of USA and Eng. Vasantha Siriwardhena of Sri Lanka will make their presentations on ‘Exploring Sustainability and High Performance Products – Fire Safety in Aluminium Composite Materials’, ‘Building Facade Integrated Photovoltaics – A Necessity for upcoming Energy Infrastructure in South Asia for Green Energy Needs’, ‘Advanced Concrete Technology for Urban Structures’, ‘Composite Structures Designed by CNC Machines’ and ‘Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development’, respectively.

A panel comprising national and international experts will participate in a discussion at the end of each session on relevant themes.

Registration for the conference is now open at the Society Secretariat at ‘Room No. 222, 2nd Floor, IESL Building, Vidya Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07’. Interested parties could contact the Secretariat through email [email protected] for registration.

SSE-SL was founded in 1990 by a group of practicing engineers and academics engaged in the field of structural engineering with the intention to serve as a forum for structural engineers in Sri Lanka. The Society organises programs such as presentations, conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. on a frequent basis in order to create an opportunity for the structural engineers and other professionals involved in the construction industry to enhance their knowledge in planning, designs and construction of buildings/structures.
