Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe this week handed over the deed to a new house to the mother of a boy who was severely injured while he was schooling at Royal College.

Identified only by his first name, Sasanka suffered severe brain damage in a pool accident several years ago.

His mother faced severe financial difficulties and the family was in danger of losing their home to road development near Marine Drive.

Following several petitions and appeals under the new Government, Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa intervened to gift a new house to the struggling family.

Wickremesinghe, also an old boy of Royal College, praised the gift and outlined plans to assist families that lost their homes under beautification programs initiated by the previous Government.

He also noted discussions were underway to provide urban and rural families with housing.

“State compensation for small houses in urban areas is often inadequate as there are several claimants for each house. Once the money is divided among the different members of the family, the funds are not enough for them to purchase a new house. We are aware of this and recognise the need to have a process whereby people can be compensated equitably,” he said.

He acknowledged that the Government needed to find a way to fast-track housing facilities around the country.
