More funds could be allocated for flood relief as corruption, wastefulness has been minimised: Ravi

_N7A1221Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake states that more funds could be allocated for providing relief to the people who were affected by floods as corruption and wastefulness has been minimised under good governance. The Minister said that substantial provisions could be allocated to provide disaster relief on directives of the President and the Prime Minister. Karunayake stated this recently during his visit to the Andrew Watta, Thotalanga area in Northern Colombo to look into the requirements of people who have been affected by floods.  

More than 500 houses were flooded and large numbers of affected people have been detained in temporary premises.

Minister Karunanayake inquired about their requirements going house to house. He instructed the provincial council members of the area to provide victims with cooked meals without delay.

The minister briefed the media following the visit. 

“People of most areas of the country have been affected by floods and disasters. The President and the Prime Minister have paid special attention to this matter. At today’s meeting held with the government officers, members of the security forces and several others, instructions were given to provide necessities to the affected people and I was also instructed to increase the daily payment given to an affected person from Rs. 150 to Rs. 225,” he said. 

“More provisions could be allocated for providing relief to the people as corruption and wastefulness has been minimised under the good governance. We similarly looked for necessities of people affected by disasters when we were in the opposition and as the Ministers of the government we are here as we are supposed to do what we say.”

Development Lotteries Board Chairman Romesh Jayawardhana and Provincial Council Members Tharanga Athuraliya, Chaminda Aluthgedara, Mahendra Silva also participated at this occasion.

Kabir to assess Kegalle devastation today

Minister and UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim will hold a meeting today at 8.30 a.m. at the Kegalle Kachcheri with relevant government officials regarding the current situation in the Kegalle district. Following this meeting the Minister will visit the Aranayake landslide site.
