Yoshitha plus five further remanded

Kaduwela Magistrate Dhammika Hemapala further remanded Yoshitha Rajapaksa and four others until 25 February, when the case was taken up for hearing yesterday.

Son of the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa Lt. Yoshitha Rajapaksa and four other suspects in the Carlton Sports Network (CSN) money laundering case were brought to the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court from the Welikada prison yesterday, under tight security.

Police informed the Magistrate that a mobile telephone had been found next to the cell holding Yoshitha Rajapaksa and the other suspects in the Welikada prison which they suspected had been used by the group in custody.

On the request of the police, the Magistrate issued an order to the Computer Emergency Readiness Team (TechCERT) to assist the police to find out what calls had been made on the discovered mobile phone.

Lawyers for the accused told the Magistrate that the bail application had been submitted on the previous date of hearing and said they awaited his decision.

Following a recess of 15 minutes, Magistrate Hemapala ruled that the five suspects will be further remanded until 25 February.

The other four suspects Nishantha Ranatunga, Rohan Welivita, Ashan Ravinath Fernando and Kavishan Dissanayake were also further remanded.

The five suspects including the former President’s son are being charged with using a start-up capital of 365 million rupees, which was obtained in an illegal manner to establish CSN and with Criminal breach of trust and undervaluing imported equipment for CSN. (DB)
