  • Vows to set up Buddhist trade chamber if trade chambers fail to safeguard Sinhala Buddhist rights
  • Alleges that Mahanayakes had no forewarning about Halal ‘compromise’
  • Slams Halal logo compromise; vows to continue agitation until certification is banned
  • Claims Anunayakas and learned monks caught in an inter-religious trap set by Milinda
  • Claims ACJU had no right to make announcement ahead of report by Cabinet sub-committee
  • Claims sales at Muslim-owned enterprises had decreased by 50%

By Dharisha Bastians
Firing from all cylinders, the Bodu Bala Sena yesterday hit back against Monday’s much-welcomed and harmonious compromise on the Halal controversy and its architects, with the monk-led group claiming it would not rest until the Islamic certification is completely banned.

The hard-line group which started the anti-Halal agitation through the country said the logo was merely the final stamp of a process that was abhorrent to the Sinhalese Buddhist majority in the island. The group said the Halal debate must continue and Sinhalese must continue to boycott Halal products.
The group slammed Presidential Advisor Milinda Moragoda and the trade chambers for brokering the compromise with the All Ceylon Jamaiythul Ulama, making it non-compulsory for companies to display the Halal logo on packaging. Calling Moragoda politically bankrupt and an agent of foreign influence in Sri Lanka, Bodu Bala Sena monks said the former Minister was engaged in a conspiracy to destroy Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

“Milinda Moragoda is creating an unholy inter-religious alliance, and attempting to destroy our learned monks. These revered bhikkus are now in the grasp of infidels,” Bodu Bala Sena National Organiser Viththarandeniye Nanda Thero told journalists yesterday.
Addressing the press briefing, Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero said they were disgusted that much-loved learned monks were joining hands with the ACJU to announce the Halal compromise. He charged that the Halal compromise had come with no warning to the Mahanayake Theros in the country.
“Those pseudo Buddhist leaders who never stood against Muslim extremism and Christian fundamentalism when it was taking root in this country five to six years ago are now suddenly claiming this is a historic occasion,” Gnanasara Thero said, referring to the monks present at the ACJU joint press briefing on Monday.
Hitting out at the business community, the Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary said the community was used to making money using shrewdness and cunning. “The trade chambers used these same tactics to manufacture this compromise on Monday,” he charged.
Taking a swipe at Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Chairman Susantha Ratnayake, the monk said that it was at the hotels of the Ceylon Chamber Chief that a Buddha Bar had been opened and an item called ‘nirvana’ was placed on a restaurant menu.
Bodu Bala Sena Executive Committee Member and layman Dilantha Vithanage charged that if the trade chambers failed to safeguard the interests of the Sinhala Buddhists, the group would take steps to set up a Buddhist trade chamber.
Vithanage said that it was unthinkable that the trade chambers, the ACJU and members of the clergy had reached consensus on such an important issue within two days.
“This is an insult to the Presidential Cabinet sub-committee that is yet to present its report on the Halal issue. The ACJU is making national decisions ignoring the Presidential committee,” he said.
He said the organisation of Muslim clerics had no business to make major announcements ahead of the report being submitted by the sub-committee. According to the group, several businessmen had complained to the committee about being coerced into obtaining the Halal certification.
Criticising the ACJU decision to provide Halal certification free of charge from now on, Vithanage said that only indicated that what they were doing in the past was robbery. “They must return all the money they made from certifying Halal, which is against their own religious teachings,” he said.
Vithanage said the monks who had joined the ACJU to announce the compromise yesterday had insulted the Mahanayake Theros who had only learned of the decision through media reports.
The Bodu Bala Sena said that they would continue their campaign of agitation and ensure Halal certification is completely done away with by the April New Year. The Group’s General Secretary said there was no point putting plasters on the problem.
The group said that the debate they had created about creeping Muslim extremism had already resulted in sales dropping by 50% in Muslim owned enterprises.

We are opposed to the niqab: BBS
Signalling that its next campaign of agitation would be against the Muslim headdress and the garment that covers the entire body known as the niqab or burqua, the Bodu Bala Sena said the costume was a signal that Sharia law was being enforced in the country.
Bodu Bala Sena Executive Committee Member Dilantha Vithanage said that in a country that did not permit tinted windows in cars because it hindered identification, it was unthinkable that women were permitted to wear a garment that only revealed their eyes.
The group’s General Secretary Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero said that the garment was causing all kinds of social problems in the country.
“A Police officer cannot identify who this person is under that garment, whether they are male or female. A woman Police officer always has to be present to check,” he said.

Please bear witness to brewing of the next civil conflict in Sri Lanka – Sinhalese (again) and this time the Muslims. Sri Lanka just finished a conflict that took 100,000 lives; just three years ago. God only knows what toll this one would take! We Sri Lankans are a short-cited race with little wisdom; hence the reason for the civil conflicts and corruption. We just can’t seem to enjoy the wonders that have been blessed up on us, instead we get in to petty crap like this!

  2. Hazari on March 13th, 2013 7:13 am

It’s evident that the so called monks of the BBS were lying about, the general public having to pay extra for halaal certified goods.
They just want to create problems. About the head scarf, if Policeman wanted to check, fully veiled women, they surely can. These BBS monks, they think they have finished the Tamils, now they’re targeting Muslims. They surely can raise so many other issues which are against Buddhism, like increasing consumption of liquor and increase in prostitution.

What a pathetic state of Buddhist affairs ! BBS is causing more social problems than a burqa. y aren’t these lunatics been caged? these morons are destroying the Dhamma.

these monks not going to stop until another ethnic war created in the country .

  5. Banu on March 13th, 2013 7:40 am

The ACJU with admirable humility spoke on Monday with words unlaced with hatred or arrogance which many hoped would bring an end to the attacks against muslims.
I am a Muslim woman who has willingly taken up the religious obligation to wear an Abaya. Myself and my sisters in Islam who dress similarly, have a right to wear the abaya. Unlike the Halal food problem where non Muslims had to eat the same food, my choice of dress does not interfere with the way of life of others. If its for security reasons during the height of terror in our why were these not issues?

Unlike in the Halal issue there cannot be any negotiations in this regard because the choice of wearing abaya is not controlled by any organIzation like the ACJU but is a simple submission to the the Almighty.

We can only hope and pray that sanity will prevail among the majority Sinhala Buddhists in this regard.

If what is printed is accurate its Very Very Sad. Why is the Authorities keeping mum. It may be said its democracy and freedom of speech. What are we creating.
During the critical time of the war, bcos we needed the Muslim brethren support then Dress was OK . Now in peace time its the problem.
Definitely BBS is on a contract to fuel the fires of another Religious/ Ethnic war in some years time down the road.
Cannot comprehend when Nudity, Drugs, Porn are not only destroying buddisht youth but society at large our respected Theros are worried about Muslim womens dress.

This is that guilt one gets after winning a battle without much ado..which apparantly offended the monks who did not anticipate a staright lay down of arms by the ACJU. Oh what will happen to their hard gained popularity if the matter dies down “just like that”.

  10. Silva on March 13th, 2013 9:33 am

There are so many bad things happening in this country but no action by BBS to stop those than just looking others religions.

  11. True Sri Lankan Muslim Patriot on March 13th, 2013 9:37 am

We would like to put it to the so called champions of Buddhism – BBS

    * Is not the free availability of hard liquor, casinos, brothels causing acute social problems (Sri Lanka which BBS claims to be a Buddhist country has one of the highest per capita consumption of hard liquor in the world)
    * Is not the adoption of tightest T-shirts and jeans (this is a dress that is not of Buddhist or Sinhalese origin but Western) worn by women in public and even to temples causing more social harm and arousing Buddhist clergy who are supposed to be celibate
    * What is the social harm caused by women covering up – it ensures social well being rather than social problems caused by wearing dresses that are revealing and encourages promiscuous behavior.
    * If women including Sinhalese Buddhist women are allowed to adopt Western fashions – why cannot Muslims adopt fashions from Muslim countries

It seems that the BBS is more concerned in suppressing Islam than safeguarding Buddhism or it thinks that one can safeguard Buddhism only by not allowing Muslims to live according to their religion

It is clear that BBS has an agenda and is acting at the behest of interests committed to suppress the Muslims and Islam in the country and not espousing the cause of Buddhism

Now a days , it is really difficult to identify a monk whether he/she is a real one or criminal one. Government should introduce a new dress code to identify the criminal monks from good monks.

  14. Walter on March 13th, 2013 10:22 am

BBS must take time to meditate on teachings of Buddha. They are the biggest threat to Buddhism. Their utterances are an insult to Lord Buddha. Can anyone who understand even the basics of Buddhism disagree?

  15. Liyanage on March 13th, 2013 10:50 am

This Bodu Bala Sena is become another extremist group which take the advantage of the majority of Buddhist in Sri Lanaka. Innocent Buddhists in Sri Lanka believe what they say without understanding the danger behind these extreme views and actions. This kind of tragedy experienced in 1983 and we all suffered more than three decades. We should respect and support to veteran mahanayaka thero’s who try to solve this problem keeping the humanity among people.

  16. Paul on March 13th, 2013 10:52 am

We have seen the pictures of Ulamas, having one arm around the shoulder of a senior Buddhist monk and another touching the body of Most Venerable Wimalaratne Thero. As per Buddhism a common man is allowed to touch only the feet of a monk. This violation of the highest caliber. Both are behaving in Machang level. I think Disciplinary inquiry should be instituted by Mahanayake’s on both parties irrelevant of the rank.

These Idiots are trying to ruin the countries economy, stop all our exports to the gulf, just to satisfy their ego, if we are Sri Lankans, and let this go unabated, we will head to another disaster, the rest of the country must wake up, if they feel so much why don’t they protest and bring relief to the people of this country who are now only having 2 meals a day, which if this Halal matter goes, will put a few 1000′s off work too. please preach the word and try to bring our people to the pansala, show them the right path than creating a all this problems, all Sri Lankans know that this is a Buddhist country, no need to prove anything, the Muslims, Tamils, Christian are our Brothers and Sisters, who have helped shape this beautiful country, please compromise for everyone sake, and save the economy, and the country!

Who is he, what is he doing, is he an ante Muslim or an Islamic phobia,or playing a cheap politics. should he know that anything and everything created by the God with a cover. When his mother carried him in her womb,a cover to protect him. Similarly, If you peel off an orange or Mango, Plantains, Rambuttans, etc, all these things will get perished once you peeled – off. Thus, a bead of a rice got a cover to protect. He should understand that in the past Men lived in the stone-age, we lived without cloths and naked . Who would like to like to go back to that stage in this moderate world.

  21. Angry mouse on March 13th, 2013 12:18 pm

This was never only about Halal…it is all about reducing the Muslim influence and if possible all Muslims from Sri Lanka. Anyone who has seen the BBS website and posters on FB knows what their ultimate goal is. In their eyes Muslims should be akin to pets in this country, laying down out of sight and feeding off the table scraps of the majority and being grateful for that.

Nobody has any right to force a woman in this country what to wear and how to wear, and we Muslim women are blessed with freedom at our birth, we won’t give up the freedom to dress the way we wish at any cost, concept of Hijab is not only a dress but it is a code of modesty for men and women and we follow a lot more than the head cover which is a way of life, extremists and racists who’s wish is to oppress the innocent won’t understand this matter, but I hope intellects will

Hilzeena, as a buddhist I am sad about these BBS morons. They are neither Buddhists or Monks but only a group of extremists who thrive on publicity and tacit government support. Majority of Buddhist are respectful of other religion as you may have experienced. It is one of the main teachings of Lord Buddha. These BBS people were not there when our armed forces waging war against the LTTE. They are only Cardboard Sandos good for nothing. This country requires all of you whether they are Sinhalese, Muslims or Tamils etc.

Please also know we accept you as who you are!

If your culture requires you to wear the burka, so be it. Let our monks go to hell. I’m so ashamed of these people.

I have seen preserved meat products on the super market shelves some corned beef cans are marked ‘ halal’ and that indicates they are for people with Muslim faith. and we have no right to object to this product on the shelf for purchase. In Srilanka the meat traders are Muslims and killing of the animals were always done according to their religious rights ever since the meat shops existed in the country. And people with Buddhist , christian, and any other faiths daily walked into these meat shops and purchased the meats with no questions asked. Most intrestingly these were the meats the Buddhist priest had in the meals offered as alms giving with no protest what so ever. All these years we lived as a multi- religious society with no dominance by Buddhist monks. Why only now? I think the Muslim head dress burqua should be prohibited in public places for the security of other people in Srilanka .And in this modern world where even animals cry for rights violations, Then why Muslim women are subjected to these silly ancient rituals .Women’s rights groups in Srilanka should protest to these outdated hard acts of Sharia law .Bodu Bala Sena has no right to interfere in the matters of other religions in Srilanka. This is a matter for the Minister of Religious Affairs and women’s rights Groups. Finally all meats sold in Srilaka is HALAL and this is what we had for years with no protest ,so why only now Muslims wants Halal Labels on local meat which is certainly Halal to them.

  40. Shihab on March 13th, 2013 4:19 pm

My fellow Sri Lankan, these monks are going for a total ban of the Halal Certification, to suffocate the Sri Lankan economy. lets put this is perspective. Our Major Exports to one country UAE was 7 billion USD in 2012, expected to rise to 9 billion this year, do you really think that the BBS has the people in mind when they are trying to kill the economy of the country! this is just one importing countries from MENA (Middle East and North Africa) , multiply this number by 20 that's what they a willing to loose for the love of god BBS open your eyes, if the government does not nip this in the bud, this will be the beginning of the end for all of us, they say that Australia wants to ban the halal as well,  the gulf region imports 31% of their meet products with the Halal Logo, I live here I know! the Australians were fooled for votes

  41. Iru on March 13th, 2013 4:22 pm

This government will not solve this problem.Cox the government is backing the BBS.I hope Sri-Lanka will not go another three decades back….Why the BBS not following the Buddhism. If the BBS have any problems go to courts…do not make problem among the innocent people in the country…..Don't know weather there are different Buddhism for BBS to follow and says to disturb other religions and people. They are like "rasthiyaadhu karayo"……This will go for another ethnic war. I respect all the religions.Even prophet Muhammad S.A.respected and did not insult a single person in his life.Every citizen has the rights to eat, dress up etc to their own way.No one can stop that.If those are not disturb to others. Its better the BBS learn the correct Buddhism and act accordingly.

I would like to thank all Singhalese/ Budhist friends who respect their religion and respect other religions. You are straight thinking and want to live in Beautiful, peaceful Srilanka in harmony with other minorities. You are stars.
I also want to remind Muslim friends who are effected/annoyed about whats going on now, that these trouble makers are only a minority in Budhist/Singhalese community. So we need to be very careful not hurt majority of Singhalese/ Budhist community by any means. They are not to blame. We need to carry on living peacefully , as we are doing, and being friendly citizens of Srilanka and contribute to peace and developent of the country.
All Srilankans deserve better life after such a bitter past few decades. All of of should do a bit in whichever possible means to contribute to society to promote tolerance and harmony. This will bebefit all of us, our parents, our children and our Sri Lanka.

I am happy to note that, Like the Americans after 9/11, The BBS start looking at the Quran for answers. But sadly reading a verse or a paragraph of Quran will not enlighten a subject unless you refer to Quran extensively and refer to saying of the Prophet together.

Quran and Sunnah( the saying of the prophet) always go together.

After listening to BBS for few weeks and their comments made recently it appears , that their long terms objective is to hit the muslims economically, the so called “Economic Hitman” of today. It is very sad that BBS treat muslims like enermy No.1 while the Govt. let it happen. The President has a task and I hope the BBs will not inconvenience him when the country faces so many challenges

First of all I am sure 99.9% of the buddist and singhaese people do not agree with BBS or atleast the buddist people I know are not definitely agreeing the BBS. They are simply creating communual disharmony.
This communual disharmony needs to be sorted out very urgently and the SL government has an urgent obligation to stop this propaganda of BBS before it goes out of the control.
This is creating unneccessary problem between society and religion. More over this may even take our country backward fo another 30years. SL cant affort to do that.

bbs claims 50 % sales drop on muslim enterprises,is that something good for our economy what about the efects on exportes, if it drops can they boast that they have done good to sri lanka and our economy, bbs has no thinking at all, what they are trying to do is create unnesasary problems in the name of halal, and dress code, can they tell all comunities what to eat and dress ,are they saying that we should as sri lankens get there permision on what to eat and dress from them, they should talk and solve issues insted of threatning, now they are screming at there own monks, whats next? , superisingly the govt is waiting patently till some nut from either side spark a fire so that we all go back in time.

I read some comentes by my muslim brothers, with anger pls do not make such coments as it would only make matteres worse, hope we all are wise enough to get over these issues by way of dialog, god bless sri lanka.

Firstly as Muslims living in a non Muslim country, we need to learn to live respecting the freedom offered to us by the respectful Buddhist community, however we should not cross the limits which could create some doubt on their minds. Time to correct our mistakes & work hard for the harmony

More will learn what is halal and what is harm and what will be the return for halal and what haram will bring in the hereafter. Poeple have been ordered to protecth them and their families from the burning & never ending fire…!

Our beloved venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero should consider about our innocent buddhist daughters wandering around the country exposing their body with sensational dresses instead of worrying about the women covering their body and face with burqa

  64. Rapa on March 13th, 2013 6:54 pm

BBS are brainless is understood by most educated and logical people who use the internet.

There are many uneducated, financially frustrated and god loving sinhalese who are fed with this hatred which is extremely sad

My view is forget the BBS, what the hell is the Govt doing??? Is it sleeping?? It is so clear that Govt is not wanting to take action about this…

Secondly Muslims are getting frustrated continuously from 01 issue after the other since last year. Its Halal, Abaya next, thereafter population control of Muslims in line. This gives a negative impression to other minorities including Christians. Tamils of course have tasted this over and over again last 60 years!!! It is high time sane and brave Sinhalese step out make things clear and put BBS in their place.. Something needs to be done if government is not bothered!!

    Over to you Sri Lankans!

  65. Dosa on March 13th, 2013 6:56 pm

@Rikas.R: Quran is from God and for all mankind. You don’t need to be muslim to hold Quran. One may accept it or not, ..There is no compulsion in God’s world but God is just. Little time given to God’s creation for test and for a great reward

…Our message to our Galagoda ‘hamduru’ to read Quran with open mind as God speak to one with open mind for great success….

This is a comment to cover all the anti Sinhala anti Buddhist English newspaper reading jet set Colombians and such others in other cities who are like stick in the mud with no clue as to what goes on in the rest of the world. Thier favourite passtime is attacking Sinhala Buddhists and their representatives like BBS through various English media in SL. The LTTE was also initially dismissed as petty crap (words used by X Fernando) and it took 30 years to eliminate them because the Colombians and their so called SB leaders like Ranil & CBK were molycoddling the LTTE. Again, when we are trying to take a stance against Muslim extremism and Sharia they are denouncing this until the Islamisation of Sri Lanka culminates in them adding another country to the 57 Islamic countries thery have managed to grab from around the world. Please don’t treat Buddhism or Buddhist philosophy as a WEAK DOCILE religion/philosophy that the MINORITIES CAN ABUSE and the compassion and wisdom Buddha preached can be misused to make Sri Lanka the 58th Islamist country or an annexation to TAMILNADU or another Christian country which can be controlled by the VATICAN or IMPERIALIST USA. After a Christiam allegedly managed to muder Ven Soma thero we have at last found a brave leader to represent the Sinhala Buddhists in BBS while Tamils have the whole Western world representing them and Muslims have 57 Islamic nations to represent them and the Christians have again the whole chritian world including the Western countries to represent them. Sinhala Buddhists are the downtrodden marginalised minority in Sri Lanka who are getting relentlessly and systematically attacked by the English newspapers and English websites on a daily basis. If not for the BBS we would be behaving like a silent majority with no backbone to stand up to the daily vile & virulent attacks against our erstwhile proud leaders like Angharika Dharmapala et al. BBS is a NON VIOLENT movement and they have every right to be ASSERTIVE against all the cunning schemes of the minorities with many hidden agendas. We have lost so many Buddhist countries in the past and it is about time these so called Buddhists took a stance not to let this happen yet again. Think of the more than 1000 Buddhist scholar bhikkus who were murdered by the marauding extremists Muslim Mughals in Nalanda and as they say history repeats. It is best to nip it in the bud before Muslim extremism already raising its ugly head in places like Kathankudy, Pottuvil, Kalmunai, Kinniya, etc.

Wel brothers in Buddhists i respect all my sinhalese friends. i dont think all sinhalese people are rascits or extremist very few people have been doing this like of hatre against muslims in sri lanka. To be frank i have many buddhist friends most of them are from the sinhalese majorities. we are not like friends more than that. so why these monks should divide us. we all are sri lankans whatever is our religions be. We muslims did not harm or hate any our sinhalese brothers.

In our 5 fives prayers we always make special prayers from the Almighty to protect our mother land from nature and from disasters. peace and harmony and prosperities in the country. We muslims love our country and all our brothers let it be any religion no matter.

What does the buddhist teaching preach us, violence, hatre, dishormny, extremist none of them, but LORD BUDDHA PREACHES LOVE,PEACE AND HARMONY.

  70. Shaik Anwar Ahamath on March 13th, 2013 7:14 pm

When Adolf Hitler was making those fiery speeches, most Germans innocently thought it was good for the country. These monks are working to a different agenda and unless stopped they’ll not only dictate what the Muslims can wear or eat but all Sri Lankans, irrespective of religions, what to wear and eat. From the size of his girth, it is difficult to believe Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero is living frugally as a Buddhist monk should but has the audacity to dictate to other religions.

  71. Tuan on March 13th, 2013 7:21 pm

Respected Galaboda Apey Haamuduruwaney please dont hate the muslims in sri lanka. we did not ask a seperate land or any benefits from you. please accept us as your friends and mostly muslim countries help sri lanka during the war and still have been helping endless.

As we respect you why dont you respect us and dont divide us please. so many attacks took place by the sinhalese people on our mosques, people, properties etc but we kept silent not because we were afraid of but we did not hate our sinhalese brothers this is our ANSWER.

If BBS wearing Burqa leads to social problems then what about wearing a bikini dress? Stats show that wearing Burqa minimises social problems than increasing. In US a women is Raped in Every 4 minutes and Saudi Arabia has the lowest no. Of rape cases in whole world,.

Are these monks more pious than the monks who lived 100 years before?
Monks like gunanadha thera, hikkaduwe sri sumangala thera, etc because they didnt find any wrong in muslim women wearing burqa but these monks do? It is not problem of muslims to protest but it is duty of every patriotic buddhist to protest because BBS are destroying buddhism, chasing people from buddhism by making pointless, foolish statements like this….

  74. Tony Montana on March 13th, 2013 10:31 pm

I helped mother lanka at the time of need to overcome Ltte diaspora , I think time and patience is running out for muslims ,the harassment ,intimidation and threat by extremist war monger monks, holding majority of good, peaceful srilankan buddhist responsible, for another civil war and ethnic clensing looming because of the ignorance political leadership.Dont forget the 1983 ,The monk ignited the civil war with tamil hindus and christians and the arm struggle of LTTE against the government of srilanka at the expense of innocent people of srilanka and the armed forces. We lost brave patriotic srilankan men and woman in uniform and another one hundred thousand disabled ,rest of there prime life because of power hungry rascist leaders. Its time for the responsible brave men in uniform to protect every srilankan irespective of any religon and ethnicity to keep the peace in a secular state and hold these politicians and monk accountable for the evil actions detrimental to srilanka. Its time for the majority of peace loving srilankans to protest against the government to stop hate against religous minorities. We are srilankans .United we stand.

  77. Bahar on March 14th, 2013 11:28 am

Another comedy of error by the BBS…Why do they have to make a big issue with the term Halal. As the term Halal is used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic Law..and by doing this it advices the Muslim Community in Sri Lanka of what they consume. “Halal” is an Arabic word meaning “lawful” or “permissible”, and the term not only covers food and drink, but also to all matters of daily life. When it comes to halal food, most people think of meat foods only. However, Muslims must ensure that all foods, particularly processed foods, pharmaceuticals, and non-food items like cosmetics, are also halal. Frequently, these products contain animal by-products or other ingredients that are not permissible for Muslims to eat or use on their bodies.
And it is surprising that how the BBS suddenly became interested the he Hijab.
As the Hijab is not only a dress but it is a code of modesty for men and women and Most often, it is worn by Muslim women as a symbol of Modesty, Privacy, and Morality.
