Union Assurance reports steady growth up to 3Q
Union Assurance PLC (UA), a leading player in the Sri Lankan insurance sector, maintained a steady growth momentum in both turnover and profits for the nine months ended 30 September 2011.
UA reported a growth rate of 28% in combined gross written premiums and 26% growth in profit after tax compared to the same period of the previous year.
TISL says blocking news websites a setback to global progressive citizenship
Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) last week in a statement said it was deeply concerned over the recent attempts by State authorities to arbitrarily block identified websites and the proposed compulsory registration of websites that publish content on Sri Lanka.
On 5 November 2011, the Director General of the Department of Information required all websites carrying any content relating to Sri Lanka or the people of Sri Lanka to be registered. On the same day, the Telecom Regulatory Commission (TRC) took steps to block certain websites, namely, www.lankaenewsweb.com, www.srilankaguardian.org and www.lankawaynews.com.

Exports to EU countries grow by 25.5%
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU Ravinatha Aryasinha has said, latest statistics from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka reveal that Sri Lanka’s exports to the EU grew by 25.5% in the first nine months of 2011 (2635 million $), compared to the corresponding period of 2010 (2100 million $).
Meanwhile, with respect to Belgium, which is the fourth largest destination among EU countries and the sixth largest destination of Sri Lanka’s exports to the world, exports grew by 41.4 % in the first nine months of 2011 (382.53 million $), compared to the corresponding period of 2010 ( 270.6 million $).
