Qatar Airways delays Azerbaijan, Georgia service

Qatar Airways has postponed the launch date of its new flights to Azerbaijan and Georgia to February, 2012 due to operational reasons.
Originally slated to start operations on November 30, the new daily services to the capital cities of Baku and Tbilisi respectively, will now begin on February 1.

US Open on hold as Hurricane Irene threatens New York

NEW YORK (Reuters): The usual last-minute preparations for the U.S. Open were aborted on Saturday as Flushing Meadows was shut down in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, which was expected to hit New York this weekend.

Boeing’s Dreamliner becomes commercial reality

Reuters: After years of headaches and occasional heartbreak, Boeing Co is ready on Friday for the US Government to declare its revolutionary 787 Dreamliner safe to fly passengers.
Operating certification by the Federal Aviation Administration will enable Boeing to make the first delivery of its plastics-based airplane next month to Japan’s All Nippon Airways.

Worldwide BPO growth continues despite mixed fortunes in developed countries – Gartner

The worldwide business process outsourcing (BPO) market is forecast to grow 6.3 per cent in 2011 and 5 per cent in 2012, according to Gartner, Inc. The outlook for BPO is mixed in developed economies, and this has resulted in a tempering of growth expectations.

Sustainable route to rural development

A key decision made by the Cabinet last week was the formation of a new entity named Department of Divineguma Combined Rural Development. On a proposal made by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, five institutions coming under him – Commissioner General of Samurdhi, Samurdhi Development Authority, Department of Upcountry Peasants Rehabilitation, Sri Lanka Udarata Development Authority and the Southern Development Authority – are to be brought under this new department.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena savours a drink made out of White Oats at the Diamond Best Foods stall after opening the three-day International Processed food, Beverage, Packaging and Agricultural exhibition at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre at the BMICH yesterday. The event is showcasing 300 companies from 15 countries, promoting over 10,000 new products and services, the organisers said. The exhibition will run until Sunday.
