Army marches in
Visiting Bangladesh Army Commander General Mohammed Abdul Mubeen was given a warm welcome by Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya at a banquet held at the Empire Ballroom at the Mt. Lavinia Hotel. The visiting Army Commander was in the island for a five-day goodwill visit. In honour of the support rendered by the Bangladesh Army and assisting Sri Lanka in strengthening its military for a considerable period.
Architecture for all
Architects’ Work and Trade Exhibition part of the Architects 2011 began this week at the BMICH. Building on the theme, ‘Architecture for all: City + Community,’ the National Conference of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) was also held this week. The artworks in this Balgo collection are very colourful and convey the energy and dynamism of the culture of the mainly Kukatja language speaking artists at the Warlayirti Artists Art Center in the Balgo Hills region. Their unique creations are on display at the J.D.A Perera Art Gallery till 2 March to give Sri Lankans a taste of their difference.

HNB records Group post tax profits of Rs.4.89 bn for 2010
The financial year 2010 was a year that presented a mix of challenges and opportunities for the financial services industry. As a consequence of the slowdown in economic activity in 2009, credit growth remained sluggish during the major part of 2010. Despite adversities faced in 2010 HNB posted robust growth for the year with pre-tax profits increasing by 13.8% to Rs. 6.7 bn and post tax profits improving to Rs. 4.46 bn.
New Zealand quake toll rises, hope fades for survivors
CHRISTCHURCH (Reuters) – Rescuers toiled for a fourth day among the ruins of New Zealand’s quake-ravaged city of Christchurch on Friday, as hopes of finding more survivors faded and the death toll reached 113 with more than 200 missing.
Faux solutions for a real problem
The Government is trying a new trick to achieve development. On Wednesday Cabinet approval was given for the Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry to monitor the effectiveness of development projects being implemented countrywide. This is a good move since the Finance Ministry in a report released late last year estimates that 45% of projects are behind schedule, but the effectiveness of these committees is also in question. The new system seeks to streamline the projects delegated to district and divisional levels and ensure that the people directly benefit. Billions have been allocated for infrastructure projects in all provinces and the divisional secretaries will be responsible for overseeing their implementation.
Chinaman set for UK debut in April
Shehan Karunatilaka’s first novel, Chinaman—a mystery story about cricket and addiction in Sri Lanka—is due to be published in the UK on 28 April by Jonathan Cape.
The novel centres around retired sportswriter WG Karunasena who is dying. His two obsessions are alcohol and the famous spin bowler Pradeep Mathew, whose meteoric career was cut short after his mysterious disappearance in 1995.
