Sri Lanka Insurance expands presence in north

The State-owned insurance giant, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd., expanded its presence in the north by relocating its Jaffna branch at a more modern and spacious location at No. 571, Hospital Road, Jaffna and opening a new branch at No. 31, A9 Road, Kilinochchi last week.

HNB calls it a year by reaching 350 ATMs

HNB has kept to its commitment to aggressively expand the bank’s electronic delivery channels with the commissioning of its 350th ATM.
The 350th ATM was ceremonially opened at the Ragama General Hospital Premises. The bank currently maintains 291 on-site (at customer centre premises) and 59 off-site ATMs spread across the island.

EDB to set afloat boat building industry in global markets

Boat building is a lucrative and thriving industry which was capitalised on by the Western world during the previous decade. The centre for manufacturing boats is now moving towards developing countries mainly due to the labour cost advantage and the trainable workforce offered by these countries.

Customs seizes illicit cigarettes worth Rs. 180 m

A massive haul of illicit tobacco, 10 million sticks in quantity, causing a loss of Rs. 180 million for the Government, was taken into custody by the Customs intelligence Unit.
These counterfeit cigarettes were imported to Sri Lanka under famous cigarette brand names.

Singapore casino to launch world’s first ArtScience museum

Indo-Lanka defence ties to be enhanced

Defence Secretary of India Pradeep Kumar left the country yesterday, concluding his three-day official visit to Sri Lanka. During his visit, the two countries discussed enhancing defence ties and agreed on several programmes to do so.

India, world’s biggest producer of pulses, extends export ban

Reuters: India, the world’s biggest producer and consumer of pulses, has extended a ban on pulses exports until further order, Farm Minister Sharad Pawar, said on Tuesday, as it battles to rein in high food prices.
The Government had in June 2006 banned exports of pulses, which has a weightage of 0.72 per cent in the wholesale price index.
