Response to global crises must prioritise zero tolerance for corruption

Berlin: With governments committing huge sums to tackle the world’s most pressing problems, from the instability of financial markets to climate change and poverty, corruption remains an obstacle to achieving much-needed progress, according to Transparency International’s 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), a measure of domestic, public sector corruption released this week.

THE Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has decided to summon all past and present heads of loss-making State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to divulge the reasons behind this gross wastage of public funds. However, it is questionable whether this move alone will provide the long-awaited incentive for making profits and lessen the burden on the common man.

Dollar rises on Fed view, stocks slip

HONG KONG, (Reuters) – The U.S. dollar edged up on Wednesday on doubts the Federal Reserve will aggressively buy assets to pump more money into the system, while commodity stocks led Asian stocks lower.

Oil down in Asian trade

SINGAPORE, (AFP) – A predicted surge in US crude inventory data dragged down oil prices in Asian trade on Wednesday, analysts said.
New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in December, shed 30 cents to 82.25 dollars a barrel.

FRONTIER market investment has come a long way since its beginning. Investors who were followed, bugged and had their passports confiscated and had to make emergency landings 10 to 15 years ago now pass through airports with ease and sometimes even without visas and are welcomed with open arms by people eager to hear their story. LaGuardia is probably the best example of all this.
